For this trend report we wind the clock back to the fabulous 50s and 60s, when cat eye frames adorned the faces of many iconic women. Marilyn Monroe wore a pair in the 1953 classic “How to Marry a Millionaire” and who can forget Audrey Hepburn in her cat eye sunglasses in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”. They were designed for women as a feminine take on the horned rim spectacles that are reminiscent of that era and were inspired by the shape of a cat’s eye.
Since then, eyewear designers have revived the cat eye trend by using bold, bright colours and introducing variations on the shape. New York Fashion Week 2014 showcased the cat eye as being one of the big trends in eye wear in 2014 and celebrities like Katy Perry and Scarlett Johansson have been seen sporting some of the latest cat eye frames and sunglasses.
So who can wear a cat eye? The cat eye suits almost every face shape but those with a heart shape face will especially love this feline look. They are equally as puuurfect for a sleek and sophisticated office look, as they are for a weekend lunch date or road trip (convertivable car and hair scarf optional). So don’t be afraid to try something new and step out in style with a bold cat eye frame.
